Tackling Freight Crime Through Strategic Partnerships
At FET Logistics, we believe that a secure supply chain is the backbone of the UK economy. To stay ahead of evolving threats, we continue to actively support industry-wide collaboration aimed at combating freight crime and bolstering resilience across the logistics sector.
We were pleased to have our Managing Director, Harry Hughes, attend the recent Supply Chain Risk Industry Partnership (SCRIP) meeting in London. Harry attended in his capacity as the TAPA EMEA UK Regional Lead, and we extend our thanks to Mike Yarwood and Joshua Finch of the TT Club for the invitation to this vital forum.
The SCRIP Alliance: A United Front Against Cargo Theft
The Supply Chain Risk Industry Partnership (SCRIP) represents a powerful UK-wide alliance. It brings together experts from across the spectrum to disrupt organised crime groups (OCGs) and safeguard assets.
The alliance includes representatives from:
- National Law Enforcement & NaVCIS (National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service)
- Government Policy Makers
- Insurers and Risk Consultants
- Freight Associations and Retailers
By working toward the shared goal of preventing cargo theft, this partnership ensures that the UK remains a secure environment for high-value logistics.
Legislative Progress: The Freight Crime Bill
A key highlight of the meeting was an update from Rachel Taylor MP regarding the progress of her proposed Freight Crime Bill. This legislation is a critical step in providing the legal framework needed to tackle modern cargo crime effectively.
Delegates also received briefings from UK law enforcement on current freight crime trends. These intelligence-led updates allow FET Logistics to refine our journey planning and risk-assessed routing, ensuring we are always one step ahead of potential threats.
The Economic Weight of UK Logistics
The focus on security at this level reflects the indispensable role of the road transport sector. In the UK:
- 89% of all goods are moved by road.
- 98% of food and agricultural products rely on the road network.
- The sector contributes £13.5 billion annually to the economy (approx. 5.6% of UK GDP).
Despite its importance, freight crime costs the UK hundreds of millions of pounds every year. This is why we treat security not as a luxury, but as a fundamental requirement.
Collaboration is Our Strongest Shield
Security is a collective responsibility. By participating in initiatives like SCRIP and adhering to TAPA (Transported Asset Protection Association) standards, FET Logistics supports:
- Intelligence-Led Security: Using real-time data to avoid crime hotspots.
- Shared Best Practices: Learning from the best in the industry to protect our drivers and your assets.
- Consistent Standards: Applying rigorous, recognised security protocols across every journey.
Through collaboration, we reduce risk, protect our workforce, and safeguard the supply chains that underpin the nation.
